Sept. 4: The Carter Family had been recording for nine years when they went to New York on Aug. 6, 1936, for the first session on their new label, Decca Records. Three years earlier, A.P. and Sara had divorced, but the group that included A.P.’s sister-in-law Maybelle Carter endured. A.P. was not always in evidence on record, but he’s here on “My Dixie Darling,” the first song cut that day. Sara takes the lead vocal in the trio and plays the autoharp, with Maybelle adding her distinctive guitar work. Many find the Carters’ Decca period wanting, compared with their seminal Victor sides.  But this is a fine record, one of my favorites by The Carter Family.
