Jan. 7: Happy 80th birthday to Jack Greene, the Grand Ole Opry stalwart whose stint in Ernest Tubb’s great 1960s band led to a top solo career — kicked off in stellar style with this song and the album of the same name from 1966. Greene’s peers honored him the next year with Country Music Association awards as top male vocalist and for single and album of the year. Listen to him sing his trademark number, dubbed from my copy of the LP. (Ah, vinyl: music the way the good Lord meant for it to be heard.) And get the skinny on the Jolly Green Giant from his Grand Ole Opry profile page.
