Jan. 22: Porter Wagoner came to be known as Mr. Grand Ole Opry, a rhinestone-clad fixture for half a century who held court on the radio revue’s two most famous stages: the Ryman Auditorium and the Grand Ole Opry House. Today marks the 55th anniversary of the first Opry appearance by “The Thin Man from West Plains,” more than two years before he joined the cast in 1957.  What better reason to play his first No. 1, already recorded by the time of that debut but not yet released.
