Feb. 12: George Strait didn’t have the first cut on this number — that honor belongs to the guy who wrote it in the mid-’60s, legendary radio DJ Bill Mack. Others who’ve recorded it include Cal Smith, Faron Young, Dean Martin and Don Gibson. But I’m guessing Strait’s version had the greatest chart success, reaching No. 4 in 1990, and appearing on the chart-topping platinum album “Livin’ It Up.”

The song has a nice melody, and its lyric sure paints a picture — one, however, that has little to do with the composer’s inspiration for it. Here’s Mack in his own words with a couple of funny stories involving “Drinking Champagne.”
