Why today? Because “the Pride of Sledge, Mississippi” was born 72 years ago today. And because I love his early work, like this song written by Jack Clement, Jan Crutchfield and Don Robertson.

About the record: RCA Victor 47-9281, recorded June 23, 1967. Released August 1967. Reached No. 4 on Billboard country chart. Also appeared on album The Country Way, RCA Victor LSP-3895, released December 1967. Topped Billboard‘s country albums chart.

About the artist: We Charley Pride fans owe a debt to professional baseball. The sport was Pride’s first love. But after stints in the Negro Leagues and the minor leagues, Pride tried out for the big leagues but couldn’t break through. So he fell back to his secondary career choice, and we’re the better for it. He went on to become one of country music’s biggest stars and a member of the Country Music Hall of Fame.
