Why today? “I’ll Step Aside” — the last of a string of 12 Top 5 singles out of 13 released — first hit the stores on this date 63 years ago.
About the record: Decca 46041, recorded March 6, 1947, in Chicago. Released April 15, 1947, it reached No. 4 on Billboard‘s country chart. First album appearance of the original was on Walking The Floor Over You, Bear Family BCD 15853, an eight-CD box set released in 1996.
This performance is from the mid-’50s, filmed at Owen Bradley’s Quonset Hut as part of what’s known as the Stars of the Grand Ole Opry series. E.T. himself tells us that the signature single-note guitar break comes from Billy Byrd. But on the record, the guitarists were Jimmie and Leon Short. In 1947, the year after the record was released, another virtually unbroken string of Top 10 Tubb numbers began.
