April 16-18

Why today? The Killer recorded this classic 42 years ago Friday.

About the record: Smash S-2164, recorded April 16, 1968, at Columbia Studio B (the Quonset Hut) in Nashville. Released the following month, reaching No. 2 on Billboard‘s country chart. Also appeared on Another Place, Another Time, Smash SRS-67104, released in June 1968. It reached No. 6 on Billboard‘s country album chart.

Here’s another of Jerry Lee’s wonderful country performances on Smash Records in the late ’60s. It was written by the late Glenn Sutton, who on this screen grab from Hillbilly-Music.com has a funny story to tell about how the song came to be.

About the artist: Follow the links on this old 3 Chords a Day installment. They’re no Schlitz, but they’ll have to do.  And I’ll see you Monday.
