April 21

Why today? Because Ira Louvin was born on this date 86 years ago.

About the record: Capitol F3523, recorded May 4, 1956, at Owen Bradley’s studio in Nashville. Released that August, it reached No. 7 on the Billboard country chart.  First LP appearance was on Encore, Capitol T 1547, released in 1961.

The Louvin Brothers were credited, but this performance was all Ira — the only time during their 23-year partnership that younger brother Charlie didn’t appear on a Louvins record. That’s Ira, too, on the mandolin, with Chet Atkins soundalike Paul Yandell on lead guitar and our old friend Don Helms on steel.
