Why today? Happy 58th birthday to Poteet, Texas’ favorite son.
About the record: Recorded April 13, 1982, at Music City Music Hall in Nashville. Appeared on Strait From The Heart, released June 3, 1982, and eventually reaching No. 18 on Billboard‘s country albums chart. Not released as a single.
This cut from Strait’s second album swings nicely, courtesy of Nashville studio pickers like Fred Newell on guitar, Sonny Garrish on steel, Buddy Spicher on fiddle and Larry Paxton on bass. What makes it special is that Strait wrote it, giving him his only composer credit on a record until 2009’s Twang album. I bet the Ace In The Hole band tore up the Texas roadhouses with this one while they were learning their craft in the 1970s. (See what blogger Razor X had to say about Strait From The Heart in his review on My Kind Of Country.)
I like the song’s sentiment, too. For a whole host of reasons, the Lone Star State would be a great place to be.
Here’s to King George. Keep making those super country records. And, sheesh, write a little more, would ya?

I can see Texas from here. I cannot, however, see Russia from my house, despite any rumors you’ve heard.
