“… another sleepy, dusty, Delta day”

Why today?
My friend Tommy Goldsmith, musician and journalist par excellence, said it best yesterday on Facebook: “Tomorrow is June 3, a prominent day in America’s pop music cosmos. If you can’t remember why, think sleepy. Think dusty. Think black-eyed peas.”

About the record: “Ode To Billie Joe,” written and performed by Bobbie Gentry, and recorded in March 1967 in Hollywood. Released on Capitol 5950, eventually reaching No. 17 on Billboard‘s country chart and topping the pop chart. Also appeared on 1967’s Ode To Billie Joe, Capitol ST-2930, which topped Billboard‘s pop and country album charts.

I blogged about this great record in October, but I couldn’t resist a repeat today, the day Billie Joe McAllister jumped off the Tallahatchie Bridge. Click on the image above to read it.
